In 1997 there were 4 swimmers having an idea for a game which involved putting water polo goals in a pool of 1.8 m deep, and livened up the lessons of the swimming school Stiftung Band Jugendhilfe. We did not know that this sport already existed. Kindly enough, Lucerne UWR players took us under their wing, and so, on 18th June 1999 we founded our own club consisting of 11 members. Today we are about 25 active male and female players between the ages of 14 and 58, some of which are members of the Swiss national teams.
We exercise one to three times a week (see Training and Calendar) and take part in various tournaments in Switzerland and Europe throughout the year. Anybody from 14 to 99 years can join us anytime and start playing with the help of our qualified youth and sports trainers. Both during trainings and tournaments our mermaids and seadogs play side by side, and with their individual strengths add to the common success of the team – and most importantly, we have a lot of fun together. Just try it out!
Our highlight of the year is the Läckerli Cup, the tournament we organise every summer in the outdoor pool Gartenbad Eglisee since 2001. Over the years, the nowadays biggest Swiss tournament has seen teams from Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy and Spain fighting for the coveted challenge cup. As they love the unique atmosphere in Basel's Eglisee pool, for many of our guests this is a fixed date in their UWR year.
Finally, all of us enjoy our regular get-togethers at Bahnhöfli, New Year's celebrations, Viking trainings, barbecue nights, and weekend trips.
